SPIRITUAL DIRECTION AT MOUNT CARMEL

Mount Carmel provides two services regarding spiritual direction. Below are described two possibilities:

A) For individuals who want to know about spiritual direction " WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION"

B) For individuals who want to be trained as a spiritual director " THE HADEN-MOUNT CARMEL INSTITUTE"

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?

Have you ever thought about Spiritual Direction and wondered…..?

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?

Spiritual direction is an ancient ministry of the Christian community whose goal is to accompany people as they deepen their relationship with God.

WHAT HAPPENS?

Spiritual direction is a helping relationship. The director helps the directee (the person who is helped) look honestly at his or her relationship with God. The director helps a person to notice and respond to God’s communication in his or her prayer and life experiences. The focus on a person’s experiences of God distinguishes spiritual direction from psychological counseling and therapy. Together the director and the directee seek to recognize and comprehend what God is saying to them. Therefore, the director does not give advice or tell a person what to do! Instead, the director helps the person pay closer attention to the inner movements and feelings that lead one toward or away from God.

HOW OFTEN DOES ONE MEET WITH A DIRECTOR?

A person usually meets with the director regularly about once a month for an hour and talks about their life and prayer experiences. Whatever is discussed in spiritual direction is strictly confidential.

HOW DOES ONE FIND A SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR?

Contact a spiritual centre or a retreat house in your area for the names of qualified spiritual directors. Choose a director with whom you can speak freely and in whom you have confidence.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

In general there is a suggested fee to sustain the ministry of the spiritual centre. The suggested donation per session at Mount Carmel is $50.00 CDN or US equivalent.

HOW DO I BEGIN?

Call Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre at 905-356-4113 for further information or for the names of available spiritual directors. For more detailed information about spiritual direction, check the Spiritual Directors International website: www.sdiworld.org

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION TRAINING PROGRAM IN CANADA

In association with The Haden Institute of Flat Rock, NC, the Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre presents a Two Year Spiritual Direction Training program. The format is distance learning (home study) plus two convenient 7-day intensive sessions each year in residence at the Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre in Niagara Falls, ON, Canada, beginning in October 2006.

This ecumenical training program is for Christian clergy, Religious men and women, Lay ministers, Directors of Religious Education, school chaplains, counselors, and individuals discerning a call to the spiritual direction ministry. A Certificate of Completion of Training is awarded to those who successfully complete the program. (Continuing Education Credits are available.)

The Spiritual Direction Training program’s teaching methodology is didactic, interactive, experiential, practical, and invites reflection on the experience of Self and God. Courses are designed to help the student acquire and develop contemplative and discernment skills. Faculty presentations will include case studies and the student will learn how to use the verbatim report as a tool to study the dynamics of a spiritual direction interview as it unfolds.

The successful student will be a person who prays daily, reads and reflects regularly on scripture, theology, spirituality, the human development sciences, contemporary culture, and social-historical developments. If not already benefiting from spiritual direction themselves, students must be willing to seek and begin a guidance relationship with a qualified spiritual director in their own locale. Each student will be required to obtain two directees to practice direct (guide) during the second year of the program.

The next training program begins October 2010. For more information and registration, please go the Haden Institute website: www.hadeninstitute.com

THE HADEN INSTITUTE

Organized in 1994, The Haden Institute offers Spiritual Direction and Dream Leader Training in the Jungian, Christian, and mystical tradition. We have over 200 graduates in the US and Canada. Our programs are offered for professionals and non-professionals. Graduates incorporate our training into their own lives, churches and professions. Some set up a private practice. The foundation of The Haden Institute is the relationship between Jungian psychology and spirituality. This purpose is achieved through training courses and conferences.

The training courses are a combination of on-site and distance learning. The Spiritual Direction Training – US and the Dream Leader Training meet at Kanuga Conference Center, Hendersonville, NC, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, for four-day weekend intensives, three times a year, for two years. The Spiritual Direction Training – Canada, co-sponsored by the Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre (Carmelites) and The Haden Institute, meets at the Mt. Carmel Spiritual Centre, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada for seven-day intensives, twice a year, for two years. All three training programs offer certificates of completion and have top faculty from across the US and Canada. The National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC), the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and the Graduate Theological Foundation endorse the Training programs.

The annual Summer Dream Conference has become the portal for Christian dream work in the country. It is a major conference for all who want to recover the ancient Biblical tradition of listening for God’s word in our nightly dreams. The conference is for professionals (especially clergy), counselors, therapists, lay dream group leaders, and anyone who wants to integrate this process into her or his life. Many return each summer for support, brokering and learning from top dream faculty from across the country. The conference has been designed for new and returning participants.

Graduate Weekends are offered for the continuing education and camaraderie of our graduates.
