SPIRITUAL DIRECTION TRAINING PROGRAM IN CANADA

In association with The Haden Institute of Flat Rock, NC, the Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre presents a Two Year Spiritual Direction Training program. The format is distance learning (home study) plus two convenient 7-day intensive sessions each year in residence at the Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre in Niagara Falls, ON, Canada, beginning in October 2006.

This ecumenical training program is for Christian clergy, Religious men and women, Lay ministers, Directors of Religious Education, school chaplains, counselors, and individuals discerning a call to the spiritual direction ministry. A Certificate of Completion of Training is awarded to those who successfully complete the program. (Continuing Education Credits are available.)

The Spiritual Direction Training program’s teaching methodology is didactic, interactive, experiential, practical, and invites reflection on the experience of Self and God. Courses are designed to help the student acquire and develop contemplative and discernment skills. Faculty presentations will include case studies and the student will learn how to use the verbatim report as a tool to study the dynamics of a spiritual direction interview as it unfolds.

The successful student will be a person who prays daily, reads and reflects regularly on scripture, theology, spirituality, the human development sciences, contemporary culture, and social-historical developments. If not already benefiting from spiritual direction themselves, students must be willing to seek and begin a guidance relationship with a qualified spiritual director in their own locale. Each student will be required to obtain two directees to practice direct (guide) during the second year of the program.
